Master's Degree Program

Graduate students majoring in real estate appraisal can apply education and experience credits towards earning the Appraisal Institute's MAI membership designation through the master's degree program at participating universities.

Individuals meet Appraisal Institute education requirements by taking pre-approved courses administered by the participating universities covering the same material and body of knowledge as those given by the Appraisal Institute, with the exception of the Standards of Professional Practice required courses and the Comprehensive Examination. (Note: Other exceptions may exist at particular universities.)

Students who are currently enrolled in the master's degree program are eligible to become Associate Members of the Appraisal Institute. As such, they:

  • Receive all the advantages and discounts offered to all Associate Members, including member prices on education and publications, but without having to pay the annual Appraisal Institute national fees;
  • Do not have to affiliate with an Appraisal Institute chapter or pay chapter dues but may attend chapter meetings and network with other members in their local area;
  • Receive the Appraisal Institute periodicals The Appraisal Journal and Valuation magazine at no cost.

Additionally, students who complete the Appraisal Institute's required demonstration appraisal report during the program will be permitted to submit it for academic credit to the participating university as an independent study project.

How To Apply

  1. For university degree program enrollment information, interested individuals should contact the participating universities directly.
  2. After acceptance into the approved university program, enrolled students may request an application for membership by emailing mdp@appraisalinstitute.org.
  3. If you are already a member of the Appraisal Institute, please contact 312-335-4111 or mdp@appraisalinstitute.org

You will be asked to provide evidence of your enrollment in the program in the form of a letter from the university so you can receive the appropriate MDP student membership.

Additional Requirements

In addition to successful completion of the qualified master's degree program, all students interested in attaining the MAI designation must:

  • Pass the 15-hour Uniform Standards of Professional Appraisal Practice and the Appraisal Institute's Business Practice & Ethics course, and possibly the Report Writing and Valuation Analysis course and exam.
  • Receive credit for the MAI Experience Requirement. Work done as part of a job, internship or thesis project may be submitted as a part of the hours requirement if it meets the criteria in the General Admissions Procedure Manual.
  • Receive credit for a Demonstration Appraisal Report on an income producing property or receive credit for the research paper or three-appraisal report alternative. A thesis project may be submitted if it meets the requirements outlined in the Official Guide to Demonstration Reporting: General.
  • Successfully pass the Appraisal Institute's Comprehensive Exam for the MAI designation.
